The Hill: A Legacy of History and Restoration
Commissioned by David Enoch Beem and completed in 1874, The Hill has been a symbol of Spencer, Indiana’s rich history for over 150 years. Beem, a Civil War veteran, lawyer, and banker, played a pivotal role in the town’s development, co-founding the First National Bank of Spencer and serving the community through his legal practice.
The home’s Italianate architectural style, featuring a three-story tower and limestone foundation, reflected Beem’s vision of elegance and prominence. In the late 1980s, The Hill was saved by Dr. William Dugan. Under Dugan's stewardship major restorations were made during the 1990s and early 2000s. Thanks to Dugan, the tower was rebuilt and the facade restored to its present condition, preserving the house’s architectural grandeur.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, The Hill continues to captivate visitors today. In May 2023, Quinn Harmon and Stefan Welsh acquired the property and are committed to restoring it further while raising their family within its storied walls.
